The People’s Freedom Caravan is a Social Movement on Wheels–a Convergence of Grassroots Communities along the way to the second United States Social Forum (USSF), happening June 22-June 26, 2010, in Detroit, Michigan.
As the participants report, “some folks are walking. Some are biking. Some are taking buses and cars. And, yes, a few of us will be flying. But all are headed to Detroit this summer for the US Social Forum”.
According to Center for Media Justice People from across the country are working “in the spirit of the freedom rides launched a half century ago”. The “social movements on wheels,” as organizers call the myriad of buses, vans, cars and even bikes making their way to Detroit, have become part of the narrative building off a similar effort in 2007, when the World Social Forum process made its way to the United States in Atlanta.
The organizers report that they are meeting up on the road, stopping in communities along the way to build a movement from the ground up, connecting our local struggles and creating a shared vision for another, better world.
Along the way we’ll build community, inspire one another, foster hope, and create change. We’ll meet new people, learn about our shared histories and experiences, and strengthen our relationships.
