The Palestinian Jamal Juma, from the grassroots anti-apartheid Stop the Wall campaign, should have been speaking in person this morning to the audience gathered for the debate on “The Political Situation Today”, in Warehouse 6 of the quays in the city of Porto Alegre.
Also participating were Bernard Cassen, from the World Forum for Alternatives, based in France; Gustavo Soto, from the Centre for Applied Studies of Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, in Bolivia; Nalu Faria, from the World March of Women, in Brazil; and Michael Leon Guerrero, from Grassroots Global Justice.
But Jamal could only speak via an image projected onto two large screens set up to beam him directly from Hamalah to Porto Alegre. This is because Jamal, one of the most assiduous representatives of the fight for peace in the Middle East and Palestinian rights at the WSF, was arrested by the Israeli army in December 2009. He was only freed at the beginning of the week prior to the event in Brazil, therefore preventing his appearance.
Prior to the session, the Stop the Wall organization together with Jamal recorded a video message, which was transmitted to the debate’s participants. He was applauded after requesting support for the Palestinian struggle “to organize a collective effort to put an end to the occupation of Palestinian territory by Israel.” Watch the video here:
Jamal also sent a letter to the Brazilian government and people to ask them not to permit a free trade agreement between Israel and the Mercosur countries. Read the letter at Ciranda

O palestino Jamal Juma, da organização Palestinian Grasrrots Anti-Apartheid Wall Campaign,Jamal Juma, deveria estar falando presencialmente ao público que acompanhou na manhã de hoje, no Armazém 6 do Cais do Porto, na cidade de Porto Alegre, a mesa de debate sobre “A conjuntura política hoje”
Participaram Bernard Cassen, do Fórum Mundial de Alternativas da França, Gustavo Soto, do Centro de Estudos Aplicados aos Direitos Econômicos Sociais e Culturais, da Bolívia, Nalu Faria, da Marcha Mundial de Mulheres do Brasil e Michael Leon Guerrero, da Grassroots Global Justice.
Mas Jamal só pode falar através de imagem projetada nos dois telões armados para trazê-lo diretamente de Hamalah até Porto Alegre. Isso porque um dos mais assíduos representantes da luta pela paz no Oriente |Médio e pelos direitos palestinos no FSM foi preso pelo Exército israelense em dezembro de 2009, sendo libertado no início da semana anterior ao evento no Brasil,o que impediu seu comparecimento.
Antes da mesa, a organização Stop the Wall gravou com Jamal sua mensagem em vídeo, transmitida aos participantes do debate. Ele foi aplaudido após pedir apoio à luta dos palestinos para “se organizar um trabalho coletivo para por um fim à ocupação do território palestino por Israel”. Assista ao vídeo aqui.
