Shared Communication – The recommendations from the I WFFM in Belém 2009

Recommendations of the First World Forum of Free Media – Shared Communication Seminar for World Social Forum.

The communication projects that exist in the universe of the WSF should participate in the effort to deepen the network of shared communication that was initiated in the WSF process and the exchanges between all the experiences with the goal to generate a global political movement for the construction of new concepts and models that are not part of the marketing communication.

The International Council members, through its Communications Commission, must take upon themselves the commitment to support the viability of these shared experiences during all activities included in the WSF process.

Bring youth communication experiences to the WSF, creating new communicators, empowering the youth through the the concept and practice of shared communication. –

Struggle for the social movements start to claim the right to communicate worldwide, causing changes in public policy, participattory management of the sistems of media, and establishment of democratic structures to serve the people and not the corporations that control them. In the case of community radio stations, this fight involves the struggle for access to radio frequencies.

Work for the internationalization of shared communications projects in cyberspace, supporting the construction, improvement and use of free platforms for the dispute and deepening of ideas and concepts of the WSF.

Fighting to stop control initiatives on the Internet, while preserving the democratic possibilities that exist today in the space-virtual. Reemphasize the importance of using free software in all the communication processes of the WSF and also in the debate on the shared communication. – call for the construction
of public backbones and for public local servers to host and exchanges of contents.

Create joint efforts to develop international training of journalists and communicators in the midst of protests and demands for another possible world.

Bringing the discussion of shared communication with discussions on access and production of knowledge locked in Science and Democracy World Forum.

SPECIAL RECOMMENDATIONS MADE BY THE AFRODESCENDENT, WOMEN, INDEGENOUS, PEASANT AND THE FREE KNOWLEDGE MOVEMENTS TO THE WSF SHARED COMMUNICATION PROJECTS :

Combat the criminalization of social struggles and movements practiced by the mainstream media.

Debate crucial issues to building a more just world, such as food sovereignty, democratizing movements dialogue with society.

Fight for social control of the media concerning to the conveyed image of women and supporting the creation and participation of communication networks formed by women’s activists.

Fight against exotic view of social disability of indigenous peoples and fight for the maintenance of their traditional and original culture , showing that not only the Indian hunting and fishing, but also uses and has the right to access and develop technologies and communication initiatives to improve life people. –

Fight against religious intolerance, combat prejudice against the black culture and against the image of black men and women, especially young people, disseminated by the media.

Fight for another view of young people and give voice to the student movement in the mass media.

Fight to defend the freedoms of the Internet and building alternatives to the controlled services of data transmission

Build alternatives for shared communication to disseminate the collective rights of the Palestinian people and support the BDS campaign

Reinforce celebrations for the Communication’s Right Nacional Week

Support the crucial struggles of community radios in the country and against criminalization
