Why a Global Day of Mobilisation and Action?
From the Zapatist uprising in 1994 and the Seattle
demonstrations in 1999, a worldwide alliance of movements
against neo-liberal globalisation, war, patriarchy, racism,
colonialism and environmental disasters appeared.
In its first phase, this movement focused on big international
mobilisations, such as Genoa against the G8 or Cancun
against the WTO. The huge demonstrations against the war
on Iraq, February 15th 2003 were the climax of this phase.
During the last years these movements grew enormously
and were rooted in national struggles and local realities.
Everywhere in the world, mobilisations appeared in different
fields. The main challenge for all of us, today, is to link those
locals and national struggles with worldwide goals, in order
to strengthen our struggles, alternatives and campaigns and
to enlarge alliances.
That is the purpose of the 2008 Global Day of Mobilisation
and Action: act locally to change globally! Give visibility to
our local struggles through a common day of action!
Why now and why January 26th?
Since 2001, the Wold Social Forum became the main space
in which one all those movements meet and built alliances.
The World Social Forum is not an event. It’s a process, which
lives in the local, national, regional and thematic Forums, in
the many and plural struggles, campaigns, alternatives for
another world which are being developed all over the planet.
The decision to hold the next WSF event in 2009, two years
after the last one in Nairobi (Kenya, Africa), helped the idea
of a global worldwide mobilisation to emerge. The date of
26th of January comes from the choice to organise the
Global Day of Action and Mobilisation in confrontation with
the World Economic Forum, summit of the neoliberal elites,
held every year in January, in Davos (Switzerland) in order
to deep the theory and practice of the domination of the
world by the capital.
We are millions of women and men, organisations,
networks, movements, trade unions from all parts
of the world, we come from villages, regions, rural
zones, urban centres, we are of all ages, peoples,
cultures, beliefs, but we are united by the strong
conviction that
ANOTHER WORLD IS POSSIBLE
With all the richness of our plurality and diversity and our
alternatives and proposals, we struggle against neoliberalism,
war, colonialism, racism and patriarchy which
produce violence, exploitation, exclusion, poverty, hunger
and ecological disaster and deprive people of human rights.
For many years we have been resisting and constructing
innovative processes, new cultures of organisation and
action from the local to the global, in particular within the
processes and Charter of Principle of the World Social Forum
from which this call emerges.
Aware of the need to set our own agenda and to increase
the impact of these thousands of expressions and
manifestations, we are committed to strengthening the
solidarity and convergence amongst our struggles,
campaigns, and constructions of alternatives and alliances.
We commit ourselves to a week of action which will
culminate in a Global Day of Mobilisation and Action
on January 26
With our diversity which is our strength, we invite all men
and women to undertake throughout this week creative
actions, activities, events and convergences focusing on the
issues and expressed in the ways they choose.

How to get involved?
The Global Day of Action and Mobilisation will be promoted
by all the organisations and movements at the global,
national and local level who wants to take part in it. Each
network, movement, organisation will decide how to
organise their own action, its issues, format and how to
connect then nationally and internationally.
All those organisations who want to join the Global Day of
Action and Mobilisation since now can:
sign the global call (through the site www.wsf2008.net)
! spread up as much as possible the day of action to
others using its own communication tools (newsletters,
websites, newspapers, radio or sending the call in its
mailings)
! organise its own actions
! give as much visibility as possible to the planned actions
for the mobilisation week and for the January 26th 2008 day
! propose international and national connections among
actions
Involvement of social actors can not come only from
technical tools like email or internet: everybody needs to
spread information, speak and interlink with other activists
and movements in all the regions of the world, actively
participating at the mobilisation process.
In a second moment, it will be necessary to build concrete
mobilisations at the local level. In this stage, through a
website, everyone at the national, regional or local level will
be able to propose actions and to build alliances and
coalitions around it. This tool will only be useful with a real
process of meetings and contact between groups.
In a third moment, it will be given wide visibility to the
decided actions.
What can be done?
! public demonstrations (rallies, mass meetings, parades,
occupations, bicycle demonstrations)
! pamphleting (editing posters, brochures and public
declarations and distribute them in communities and
public venues like open markets, trains and bus stations,
schools and churches)
! cultural and artistic activities: performances, interventions,
movie and debate sessions, shows, theatre,
! graffiti, workshops to create banners, tools and
musical instruments (to be used in mass demonstrations,
for instance)
! torchlight and candle demonstrations
! conferences, seminars, debates in universities,
factories, community centres and churches
! assemblies
! boycotts
! thematic and regional forums

O Dia de Mobilização e Ação Global será realizado por todas as organizações e movimentos em nível internacional, nacional e local que queiram envolver-se. Cada rede, movimento, organização decidirá como organizar suas próprias ações, seus temas, seu formato e como irá articular suas conexões nacionais e internacionais.
Por que um Dia de Mobilização e Ação Global?
Desde o levante zapatista, em 1994, e as manifestações
de Seattle, em 1999, surge uma aliança mundial de
movimentos contra a globalização neoliberal, a guerra, o
patriarcado, o racismo, o colonialismo e os desastres
ambientais.
Esse movimento teve como marcos as grandes
mobilizações internacionais como as realizadas em Gênova
e Cancun contra a OMC. Atingiu seu apogeu em 15 de
fevereiro de 2003, com a grande manifestação mundial
contra a invasão do Iraque pelos Estados Unidos.
Nos últimos anos, esses movimentos cresceram
enormemente, enraizados na lutas nacionais e realidades
locais. Em todos os cantos do planeta, mobilizações
surgem em diferentes áreas. O principal desafio agora é
fazer a conexão entre estas lutas locais e nacionais com
objetivos mundiais para ampliar alianças e fortalecer
nossas lutas, alternativas e campanhas.
Este é o propósito do Dia de Mobilização e Ação Global em
2008: atuar localmente para mudar globalmente! Dar
visibilidade às lutas locais por meio de um dia de ação
comum!
Por que o dia 26 de janeiro?
Desde 2001, o Fórum Social Mundial (FSM) se tornou o
principal espaço no qual todos esses movimentos se
encontram e constroem alianças.
O FSM não é um evento. Ele é um processo que está vivo
nos fóruns locais, nacionais, regionais e temáticos, nas
muitas lutas plurais, campanhas, alternativas para um
outro mundo que são desenvolvidas em todo o planeta.
A decisão que o próximo FSM se realize em 2009, dois
anos após o FSM em Nairóbi (Quênia, África), abre espaço
para que uma ampla mobilização global se realize em
2008. A data, 26 de janeiro, foi escolhida como forma de
manter o confronto com o Fórum Econômico Mundial,
encontro da elite neoliberal que acontece sempre em
janeiro em Davos (Suíça) para aprofundar a teoria e a
prática da dominação do mundo pelo capital.
Uma semana de mobilização
culminando em um Dia de Mobilização e Ação Global em 26 de janeiro de 2008
Como se envolver?
O Dia de Mobilização e Ação Global será realizado por
todas as organizações e movimentos em nível
internacional, nacional e local que queiram envolver-se.
Cada rede, movimento, organização decidirá como realizar
suas próprias ações, seus temas, seu formato e como irá
articular suas conexões nacionais e internacionais.
Para participar desde já desta mobilização, sua
organização deve:
! assinar o chamado global (no site www.wsf2008.net)
! divulgá-lo ao máximo utilizando seus próprios meios de
comunicação (boletins, sites, jornais, programas de rádio,
ou redistribuindo em seus mailings o chamado)
! organizar suas próprias ações
! dar a maior visibilidade possível às ações já planejadas
para a semana e o dia 26 de janeiro de 2008.
! propor conexões nacionais e internacionais entre ações
A implicação dos atores sociais não se dará apenas com
ferramentas técnicas como email ou internet: é preciso que
todos e todas divulguem informações, falem com seus
contatos e com outros movimentos e organizações de
todas as regiões do planeta, participando ativamente do
processo de mobilização.
Em um segundo momento, será necessário construir
concretamente as mobilizações em nível local. Neste ponto,
um site na internet permitirá que cada um/a proponha uma
ação e construa alianças e coalizões em torno a ela. Mas
esta ferramenta só funcionará se houver anteriormente um
processo real de encontro e contato entre os grupos.
Em um terceiro momento, se dará ampla divulgação às
ações definidas.
O que pode ser feito?
! demonstrações públicas (marchas, paradas,
ocupações, bicicletadas)
! panfletagens (editar cartazes, cartilhas e
declarações públicas e distribui-los nas
comunidades e locais públicos como mercados,
estações de ônibus, trens, escolas e igrejas)
! atividades culturais e artísticas em geral:
performances, intervenções, sessões de cinema e
debate, shows, teatro, grafites, oficinas de criação
de banners, bonecos, instrumentos musicais
! desfile de tochas ou velas
! conferências, palestras, debates em
universidades, fábricas, centros comunitários e
igrejas
! assembléias e mutirões
! boicotes
! fóruns temáticos e regionalizados
