About Nepathya
Nepathya performs in the name of peace with its music that combines traditional Nepalese folk music with rock. The group that still in the 90’s played romantic love songs has become a civic activist giving a face and a voice to the innocent victims of violence.
In its home country Nepal, Nepathya has spread the word of peace in the midst of war and conflict. In the spring of 2004, 15 000 people paid attention to Nepathya’s message during the Education for Peace tour that visited 15 villages and raked in 140 000 dollars for the schools in the villages it had toured. A document of the tour, Leave our Schools Alone, portrays the group’s demands for a school system free of politics and violence for Nepal.
Their latest album, Ghatana (2005), is named after an incident, in which six innocent Nepalese lost their lives, as their bus was caught in crossfire between Maoist rebels and the army in Dolakha. The album is a protest against ideological violence.
Nepathya, which was founded 15 years ago, has gone through great changes; in addition to its key message, the group itself has changed over the years. The only original member of the group is Amrit Gurung, the leader of the group and its lead vocalist, whose voice is the trademark of Nepathya.
