7th WFFM discusses the right to have a voice in a world at war

The event takes place in the midst of the climate of uncertainty caused by wars, criticism of Western media for the colonizing gaze that prioritizes victims and refugees according to their origin, and the role of digital media corporations that favor the use of their platforms for disinformation and the dissemination of false news that end up influencing the politics of several countries. Together with them, racism, intolerance and sexism spread.

The field of the so-called free media needed to delve into the strategies of resistance to the erasure of media diversity that is being exchanged for a diversity of voices subject to the same technological control imposed by corporations.

This resistance implies analyzing, understanding and disseminating the communicative struggles at the political and social level, at the same time that it is necessary to create, stimulate, protect and strengthen free media and without subordination to economic, governmental or partisan power. Free media encompasses the publications and productions of civil society, its organizations and movements, as well as the creators of resources, programs, art and content that circulate outside the mainstream media. It also encompasses researchers, technicians and movements that seek to change the media landscape, with fewer monopolies and more plurality.

The WFFM debate in recent years has shared knowledge and issues related to communication systems and hegemonic discourses, the advancement of technology and the exclusion of large contingents from the right to communicate. Born in Belém in 2009, he dealt with threats to the planet, economic crises propagated by the rich West, revolts in the Arab world, coups and resistance in Latin America. He addressed the consequences of the pandemic, seeking to contribute to their fight and also to survive its harsh restrictions.

In this edition, the WFFM opens its panels discussing peace and democracy from the point of view of the free media that seek to defend them in the midst of adverse media narratives. It continues with a panel on the construction of autonomous networks by indigenous and peasant communities, outside the standards determined by the Internet or even where it does not reach. It also promotes a third panel on disinformation and the efforts of civil society to regulate the platforms, to turn them into a place of emancipation from the hyperconnected society, and not of the formation of humanity.

Along with these panels, the WFFM brings together a series of workshops, dialogue tables and workshops – including a historical tour of the communication struggles in Mexico, in addition to publicizing other communication activities registered in the WSF.

The final messages will be taken to other collective processes of the WSF 2022, such as the Free Palestine World Forum, the Women’s Convergence Assembly and the Final Assembly, in which the main recommendations resulting from the activities of the WSF will be collected.

Check the program of the 7th World Forum of Free Media. Part will be face-to-face, part hybrid and part online, but everything will be broadcast through WSF 2022 channels.
