Llamamiento para un Foro Social Mundial de las Ciencias y la Democracia
Hacia un diálogo político entre los científicos y los movimientos sociales a través del planeta
Desde el año 2001, los Foros Sociales Mundiales han gradualmente estructurado las agendas de miles de ONGs, medios, sindicatos, movimientos sociales e incluso gobiernos a lo largo del planeta. Hoy son considerados como eventos mayores donde elaborar, compartir y construir transformaciones sociales, culturales y económicas en los niveles locales y en los niveles globales.
Aunque los impactos en nuestras vidas diarias de las ciencias y las técnicas sobre las realidades económicas, sociales y ambientales son más grandes que nunca, hemos estado observando, desde los orígenes del FSM, un déficit crónico de temas científicos y técnicos en estos foros.
La razón para esto no es ni la indiferencia ni la ausencia de capacidad de análisis, sino que es la falta de consideración política de las apuestas vinculadas a la ubicación y el futuro de las ciencias en nuestras sociedades, en apoyo a ambos, los movimientos sociales y los científicos
Es por esto que creemos que la construcción de un espacio de cooperación abierta, de amplios y democráticos debates públicos entre científicos, ONGs y movimientos sociales a nivel mundial, abrirá nuevas y excitantes oportunidades para:
1.. promover y desarrollar el conocimiento común de la humanidad como bienes públicos;
2.. debatir sobre los temas y medios para apoyar a los científicos a cumplir completamente con su responsabilidad social ;
3.. reforzar la autonomía de los investigadores, defender las misiones públicas de investigación y mejorar las condiciones en las cuales las actividades científicas son conducidas por los estudiantes, los investigadores, los ingenieros;
4.. reforzar la capacidad de los movimientos ciudadanos para producir conocimiento y ser asociados de las instituciones científicas;
5.. reforzar la capacidad de nuestras sociedades, en el Norte como en el Sur, de tomar decisiones democráticas en los campos de la ciencia y la tecnología;
Los científicos y los movimientos sociales necesitan compartir su conocimiento experto y concepciones para construir sociedades que respeten mejor los derechos humanos, la diversidad cultural y las necesidades sociales y ecológicas.
Por todo esto, nosotros, miembros de la comunidad científica, organizaciones y ciudadanos, estamos convocando a la organización del Primer Foro Social Mundial sobre Ciencia y Democracia durante el FSM a realizarse en Belem, Brasil, en enero del 2009.-

What is it about?!
We are a few people who have participated at some World Social Forums and had organised seminars questioning the current scientific and technical development, the relation between democratic societies and the place of science and research in it and how research could respond the best to the enormous challenges humanity and our planet are faced to – poverty, inequality, diseases, environmental and sanitary problems, and also intellectual property rights, exclusion, etc.
We think that, up to now, questions of science and democracy got unfortunately not enough attention from the forums. Therefore, our idea was to launch a call for a “World Social Forum on Science and Democracy” that would be linked to the next WSF that will take place in Belem, Brazil, in January 2009.

=> Concerning the call: the text is thought to be a large and consensual basis for different people – scientists and scientists organisations, NGOs, citizens and citizens movement – who might be interested in the issue. It is a paper of a compromise after long discussions elaborated by some people from NGOs, unions and scientists, with quite different approaches and visions.
=> Concerning the procedure: we will present the call to the International Council of the WSM during its next meeting at the end of October in hoping that the initiative will be accepted as part of the WSM (one of us, Gus Massiah, is also member of the IC). If the initiatve is accepted,
the current text will serve as a basis to elaborate, with all volunteers who will join us, a charta of the WSF science and democracy
we will have to find people willing to engage actively in the process
Now the questions to you !:
We would be very happy to have you from the very beginning with us.
– If you agree to the ideas our text proposes, please go to our website http://fsm-science.org/ and sign it. And please do so before October 25 (knowing that the IC will meet at October 28 and that our IC member has to leave on October 26 to Belem).
– If you agree, please spread immediately the text around you to people you consider interested in order that the initiative can gain its full dynamic.
– Please tell us if you would be interested to join us as member of the provisional committee that should be active from now on up to the moment when, may be at the beginning of 2008, a permanent committee will be created with a large international participation.
– If you feel able to translate the call into a language we do not yet have, please do not hesitate to do so and to send us your translation !
